CENOTE EL PIT
El Pit is a very special Cenote, great for pictures if you have a light sensitive wide angle camera.
Just as most other cenotes it starts with going down a pretty small hole in the jungle, but as you descend, El Pit opens up to a vast chamber under the jungle floor. First 15 meters are freshwater but then turns into salt water. The cave continues down to around 30 meters, and down there lies an island with some fallen trees and branches. Around the island floats a hydrogen sulfide halocline cloud and below it the cavern continues. If you’re a certified cave diver you can dive further in and find another even bigger and deeper chamber. But we were satisfied enough with what we got. El Pit is one of our favorite cenotes.
