FRASER ISLAND
Fraser Island is the world’s largest sand island located on the east coast of Queensland. Driving on Fraser is quiet a special experience and it requires a 4 wheel drive. We got to Fraser from Inskip point in the south, there are barges departing all day from there. It is recommended to access Fraser at low tide, otherwise you will not get access to the main beach on the east coast from the south.
We got to Fraser at low tide in the early morning and drove most of its 125 km long east coast beach in under 2 hours. Driving at low tide on the beach is like driving on a highway, but driving when the tide is high is a totally different story. The loose sand is really hard on the car and you have to go slow, but not to slow, not to get stuck in the sand. On our first day we went to see the Maheno wreck, had a look at the Cathedrals (some red rocks along the beach), stayed a few hours at Eli creek (a creek where you can have a safe swim in cool fresh water) and finally we drove along the coast to find a campsite for the night. Beach camping on Fraser Island was one of the best moments of our trip, a truly magical experience with the great beach and the spectacular night sky. On the second day we got up really early (5am) for a drive to the beautiful Lake Mckenzie. This is a fresh water lake with beautiful beaches located 10 km into the jungle. Driving there is tricky and you drive on a small sand road for over an hour, getting stuck is not unusual. Getting up early was really rewarding. We came first to the lake and could enjoy the spectacular beach totally empty and quiet. Two to three hours after our arrival the beach was almost unrecognizable. Crowded with huge party tents, inflatable boats and screaming children...That was our cue.
