THE JESUS TOUR
Although we are not religious people, the impact of Jesus and Christianity can’t be disregarded, especially when you are from a mildly Christian country in Western Europe. So we went on a Jesus tour departing from Tel Aviv.
We soon realized that in every important place with a connection to Jesus, someone has put a big church on top of it.
First stop was the old town of Nazareth where we went to see the grotto where the angel Gabriel told Jesus' mother Mary about Jesus' arrival. The Church of Annunciation was later put on top of the grotto. Next to the church we went to see Joseph's workshop, on top of the workshop was a church, St Joseph Church. Joseph was Mary's husband, but not Jesus' father.
We went to the Jordan river where Jesus got baptized by John the Baptist. As you can imagine, this is a popular place to get baptized, also a great place to get ice cream.
The third stop was Capernaum north of the Sea of Galilee, a small town where Jesus met Peter, one of his top disciples and a fisherman, not our favorite stop of the tour.
The last stop on the bus tour was the place where Jesus multiplied fish, on top of this place was the Church of Multiplication, the church has some fine mosaics. We got a fish lunch near this place.
The last chapters of the Jesus tour took place in Jerusalem and those places we visited on our own when we got there.
We started at the Gethsemane garden, where Jesus and his disciples prayed on his last night, as Jesus knew the future, this was not a happy gathering for him.
Next we walked the Via Dolorosa, where Jesus carried the cross. Of course you could buy the Crown of thorns to put on your head there.
After Via Dolorosa comes the site of the crucifixion, there is a church on top of this place, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Inside this church is a smaller chapel-like building with a long queue around it, that is Jesus' tomb.
Last stop of the tour is on the Mount of Olives where Jesus left the earth to go see his father, on top of this place is the Chapel of Ascension. There is a falafel place next to the chapel.
