KOH LIPE
Our second stop during this visit in Thailand was the biggest and most exploited island of the three. Koh Lipe is located two hours by speedboat from Pak Bara in southern Thailand, close to the Malaysian border. Koh Lipe has become very popular in recent years and can be really crowded in some places. Koh Lipe is surrounded by three main beaches, Pattaya Beach, Sunrise Beach and Sunset Beach. In between lies resorts, local villages and Koh Lipe Walking Street. Walking street is the tourist nerve of the island connecting the two main beaches and filled with restaurants, bars and souvenir shops. We found the street too busy and a bit crazy in the evenings, but pleasant to visit during the day and especially early morning.
It was quite windy on our side of the Island, Sunrise Beach during our stay in Koh Lipe, so we walked to Sunset beach. In low tide it’s possible to walk along the coast to the west from there and discover a series of smaller beaches. Some of which have resorts and restaurants, and some that are wild. In high tide the only way to access these beaches is by kayak. We really enjoyed this part of the island, it’s very calm and beautiful.
Snorkeling from Sunrise beach was pretty OK, but unfortunately there are lots of dead corals in this area.
