KOYA
Staying a night at a Buddhist temple when in Japan is highly recommended, and a beautiful place to do this is in Kōyasan. Kōyasan is a small village on the holy Mount Kōya with quite a few temples to chose from. Besides the 120 temples located here the main attraction is Okunoin, the mausoleum of Kūkai, the Grand Master who propagated the Buddhist teaching. The walk up to Okunoin goes through a vast graveyard in a forest. Don’t miss this, it’s quite a magical place! Staying at a Buddhist temple was a really pleasant and interesting experience including vegan food, onsen and a Buddhist morning ceremony.
