KYOTO-CITY LIFE
We stayed in Kyoto during the Gion Matsuri festival, one of the most famous festival in Japan. We saw some of the festivities but missed the main parade due to a stupid misunderstanding. We mixed up am and pm and thought the parade would be in the evening – turned out it was held at 8.00 in the morning. One of the things we enjoyed the most was people watching. During the festivals a lot of people are wearing their traditional Yukata, summer Kimonos in beautiful colours and patterns. We stayed at a Ryokan a few blocks north of the train station, this part of the town is very quiet with mostly residential houses and some small, cozy restaurants. Going a few blocks further north will get you to the busy city center.
