MACHHMERMO ̶ GOKYO
The night was really cold and we slept with the duvet jacket on in our sleeping bags. At this altitude it’s not uncommon for the water bottles to freeze in the room during the night and we were told not to put them in the window. The first part of the day was similar to the day before with a trek through green hills and rocks, but after a while the landscape changed and got harsher and rockier. We walked along the Dude Koshi river slowly uphill and saw the majestic Cho-Oyu, 8201m, in front of us. We went through many different kind of landscapes and it was wonderful to see the nature change. The trail was partly narrow and steep, we crossed the river, and shortly after we saw the first and lowest lake out of the in total six Gokyo lakes. The Gokyo lakes form the highest freshwater lake system in the world. Further up the second emerald green lake appeared. Surrounded by beautiful white mountains and black rock walls. The trail began to flatten out and we soon reached the third lake next to Gokyo town and Gokyo-Ri, 5360m. From here Cho-Oyu rises behind Gokyo and the scenery is magnificent. Gokyo at 4800m is a gathering place for many different trails and has a few tea houses and even a little bakery serving delicious cheese cake. In the afternoon we took a tour up a hill nearby for a good view of the Ngozumba Glacier, the longest one in Nepal coming down from Cho-Oyu. The ice was covered with sand, rocks and some lakes, forming a monochrome moon-like landscape. Even if we couldn’t see much of the ice below the sand and stones we could hear it move down there.
