MASADA & THE DEAD SEA
We took a second bus trip, this one from Jerusalem going out through the desert to Masada.
Masada is fortress on top of a mountain plateau located west of the south tip of the Dead Sea.
It is famous for the siege at the end of the first Jewish-Roman war year 73. The Roman siege ended after they built a ramp up to the plateau and found 960 Jews who had committed suicide or killed each other, only 2 woman and 5 children were found alive. It is an interesting place to see and the view from up there is very nice, although it is very hot in the desert. The nature is quite spectacular around the Dead Sea which lies around 430 meter below sea level, the Dead Sea is constantly sinking lower each year and there are a lot of sink-holes around the shores, a dangerous place to be. So for bathing in the Dead Sea you have to go to a designated beach, our tour stopped at the Kalia Beach on the north western shore. Kalia Beach is a tourist trap with stores, bad food, a lot of people and the lowest bar in the world. But if you want to try the water with 34% salt, this is one of the places.
The experience of bathing there is more strange than you would imagine, the water is oily from the salt and it is almost impossible to swim because your arms and legs are not in the water. Even standing up is hard because you will start to float and lose your foothold, all very strange, but fun!
